Buying a Home in Raleigh? Here are the Top 4 Up-and-Coming Neighborhoods

Raleigh is booming—in both popularity and growth. In fact, Raleigh is the 10th fastest-growing metropolitan area in the United States and the fastest in North Carolina. With so many people moving in, the city is also seeing a boom in new neighborhoods.

If you’re looking to buy a home in Raleigh and want to be close to the action, here are the top four up-and-coming neighborhoods to check out.

Historic Oakwood

A historic home.

Located just east of Downtown Raleigh, the Historic Oakwood neighborhood is easily recognizable, known for its stunning 19th century homes and Victorian-style architecture. A large number of homes here have been restored and preserved to reflect their original state, but you’ll find plenty of new options as well.

Since Downtown Raleigh is just a street or two over, Oakwood has a prime location. Highlights near the neighborhood include the Museum of Natural Sciences, the North Carolina State Capital, and Moore Square.

Cameron Village

Just a few blocks north of NC State’s North Campus, Cameron Village is close to the action of the university, but far enough away to avoid the typical traffic. Since a number of both current and past students choose to live in the neighborhood, there are plenty of affordable housing options like townhomes, but there’s also a mix of expansive estates and stately single-family homes.

When it comes to life in Cameron Village, the neighborhood is known as a hot spot for shopping and dining, with more than 100 options to choose from. Our personal favorites are the biscuits at Tupelo Honey and the fresh brews from Benelux Coffee!

Boylan Heights

A brick building.

What started in 1907 as a suburban neighborhood, Boylan Heights is now located in one of the most highly sought-after areas of the city, just off the rapidly growing Warehouse District. Since the neighborhood is so popular, you’ll find that homes are a little pricier than other neighborhoods and are mostly single-family properties.

If location is what’s important to you, then you’ll love life in Boylan Heights. Within a few blocks, you’ll find major stops like Dorothea Dix Park, the Boylan Bridge, and Morgan Street Food Hall.

North Hills

North Hills is perched just above the 440 Beltline, making it the only neighborhood on the list to not be considered ITB (or Inside the Beltline). But that doesn’t make it any less popular! In fact, the neighborhood has been booming as of late, bringing in plenty of new developments. You’ll find homes here ranging anywhere from $350,000 to over $1 million.

The biggest attraction in North Hills is the North Hils Shopping Plaza, an expansive outdoor hub of shopping and dining. The Midtown Plaza in North Hills is home to events like a summer concert series, a weekly farmer’s market, and a holiday tree lighting. It’s also just minutes from 440, so getting around Raleigh is ultra convenient.
