It’s no mystery why new residents are flocking to the Triangle—there’s quite a lot to be found here. High-paying jobs, affordable housing, tons of parks and trails, plenty of entertainment… the Triangle has it all. So it’s also no surprise that three of North Carolina’s fastest-growing towns can be found right here. But did you know that they’re also some of America’s fastest-growing towns?

Town growth is about more than new residents. It’s about growth and development as a whole—that is, homes and housing units, income, businesses, and more. It’s easy for a town’s population to grow… and outgrow its surroundings, leading to housing and employment shortages. Luckily, that’s not the case in the Triangle.

So… which towns are growing the fastest? Raleigh is the #1 fastest-growing city in NC, closely followed by Cary and Wake Forest. Raleigh’s population change was the third-highest in the state (+11% over 5 years, +31% over 10 years) and its owner-occupied housing rate increase was the second-highest (+22% over 10 years). It also saw a per capita income increase of 15% over 5 years.

Many of America’s fastest-growing towns are beach towns, like The Villages, FL and Myrtle Beach, SC, largely thanks to the growing number of baby boomers reaching retirement age. Texas towns are also growing in popularity, due to the economic growth of major cities like Austin, Dallas, and Houston. A surprising number of western towns, like St. George, UT and Greeley Colorado, also show signs of rapid growth.

But quite unsurprisingly, Raleigh, NC ranks in the Top 10 Fastest Growing Towns in America. A booming job market has drawn residents not just from other states, but also from other parts of the world, and while the population of Raleigh has climbed nearly 20% in the last 8 years, the number of people working in the area has climbed 25%.
